Standard primers rely on "mechanical adhesion"—they need a rough surface to grip onto. On smooth surfaces like vinyl or glossy trim, they slide right off.
Bonding primer uses urethane-modified acrylics to create "chemical adhesion." It bites into the surface on a molecular level, creating an unbreakable bond that doesn't require heavy sanding.
If your home has any of these surfaces, standard paint will peel without it.

Short answer: Minimal sanding, maximum cleaning.
Bonding primer dramatically reduces sanding requirements, but proper surface cleaning is essential. You must remove dirt, grease, oils, waxes, and mildew regardless of primer type. The primer can't bond to contaminants—only to the actual surface.
For extremely glossy surfaces, a light scuff sand helps, but it's not the critical factor it is with regular primers. The bonding chemistry does the heavy lifting.
No—remove loose, flaking paint first.
Bonding primer isn't designed for structural paint failure. If paint is actively peeling, flaking, or bubbling, it must be scraped off. The primer bonds to the substrate, not to failing paint layers.
For this specific situation, specialty products like Zinsser Peel Stop exist, but proper surface preparation is still required. There's no primer that can magically fix loose paint.
Because it's engineered to do two jobs exceptionally well:
A gallon costs $40-70 vs. $20 for standard primer. But consider the labor savings: eliminating 6 hours of sanding at $75/hour saves $450. Plus, preventing a $6,000 repaint in 3 years makes the $50 price premium irrelevant.

Minimum: 1-2 hours. Maximum: 7-14 days.
Most bonding primers are ready for topcoat in 1-2 hours. However, exterior applications must be topcoated within 7-14 days or adhesion degrades.
Bonding primers aren't formulated to withstand prolonged UV exposure and moisture—that's what your finish coat does. The sooner you can topcoat and protect the primer, the better your long-term results.
Marketing vs. Engineering.
"Paint and primer in one" products are higher-quality paints with better coverage and hiding power. They're great for repainting similar colors on already-primed surfaces.
They are not bonding primers. They lack the specialized acrylic-urethane chemistry that creates molecular adhesion to non-porous surfaces. Using them on vinyl siding, glossy cabinets, or metal will result in paint failure.
Real bonding primer is a separate product designed specifically for adhesion challenges.
